It is possible to get very close to that elusive 100% figure. It's not difficult, but not many people know how.
Downtime is embarrassing and can cost you a lot of money. Anyone who is concerned about keeping their website online will no doubt have spent hours searching for a reliable host. The trouble is, ALL hosts experience a significant amount of downtime. Hardware fails, software has bugs and needs to be upgraded regularly. Just rebooting the server can take an agonizing length of time. Knowing this makes it tempting to give up, but there is an easy solution!
If your web site is on two servers, when one becomes unavailable the other can take over. Web hosting is so cheap these days that there is no reason not to do this. Here's how it works:
1) set up your web site on your primary host as usual.
2) get a second hosting account with a different provider and upload your site files are there as well. To be completely safe, the second provider should house their servers in a different datacenter, preferably in a different country.
3) get an account with DNS Made Easy and configure it so that your domain is pointing to the IP address of your primary host. (It's not difficult - there are easy to follow instructions.)
4) Here's the clever bit! Activate system monitoring within DNSMadeEasy, and enter the IP of your secondary host. DNS Made Easy will now check your site every few minutes, and instantly switch to your backup server if there is a problem. That's it!
Once it is set up, you can relax.
I could have written a lot more about the benefits of using DNSMadeEasy, but you may as well read about that on their website. They even have video tutorials to make your life as easy as possible.
